Guide to Making the business case for mindfulness


A guide to promoting mindfulness to corporate clients.

This document was created in response to demand for information on how to promote mindfulness to corporate clients. It has taken quite some time to write, and we hope you will agree that it is presented it in an accessible, easy to use format.

Section 1 was written with the needs of mindfulness teachers and coaches in mind. Some of this guide may also be helpful for people working within organisations who wish their company to introduce a new mindfulness intervention within their organisation. On the last page of this section (1.8) you will find a section dedicated to introducing mindfulness from within an organisation. 

Section 2 contains a list of organisations who have had mindfulness training, case studies of organisations & leaders who have adopted mindfulness.

Section 3 contains a summary of the key research into mindfulness, split into subject areas that may appeal to organisations such as focus & concentration, Decision making, health and well being etc.

Section 4 contains further background information that may be useful when making a business case such as CIPD/ HSE research, relevant information on neuroscience, books & websites.

Because this document has taken quite some time to write it is being offered on a voluntary donation basis.  All donations will contribute to the development of more resources like this, and help to subsidise the running costs of Mindfulnet.org, so it can continue to be offered as a free resource for all.

Be Mindful online

Be Mindful Online is a structured course that trains participants to practise mindfulness in daily life. Thousands of people have taken the course and report truly life-changing reductions in stress, anxiety and depression.

Breathworks Introduction to Mindfulness

This course is for anyone who is suffering with stress or simply wants to learn about mindfulness, cannot attend a local course and wants to practise from home. You will learn a wide range of mindfulness skills to reduce your stress and the associated suffering. Each week of this eight week course you will learn new strategies and approaches.

Mindfulness Meditation

Designed by Stephan Bodian, this app includes an  8-week plan of daily activities that help you establish and maintain a regular practice. It includes 6  guided meditations of varying lengths, from 5 to 40 minutes. It also includes 8 talks on integrating mindfulness in everyday life.

The mindfulness bell

This is a nice simple app that costs less than £1.  You can set it to ring  periodically during the day, to give you the opportunity to hold on for a moment and consider what you are currently doing, and in what state of mind you are while you are doing it. Updated versions now have better options for people who work on quiet environments.  Available from Google

Includes a number of short guided mindfulness practices.  Also includes a mindfulness bell which you can set to remind yourself to be mindful periodically throughout the day.

Insight timer

This free app includes a range of lovely Tibetan singing bowl sounds to guide you through your practice. You can  use it as a timer and to record your experiences if you wish to. Recent updates include guided meditations by teachers.  The upgrade version (paid)  includes interval bells, and a wider variety of bells. It includes an optional daily meditation reminder.  Available from Google Play and I tunes

Walking meditation

This app is designed to help you with walking meditation.  You can set the duration and your intent for the walk.  You will receive some instructions and reminders during your walk.  You can keep a diary of your experiences if you wish to.  Available from Google Play and I tunes

Be Mindful - Mental Health Foundation Campaign for Mindfulness   Be mindful is a campaign being run by the Mental Health Foundation launched in early 2010. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the benefits of mindfulness for those experiencing mental health issues. 

Breathworks   offers mindfulness-based approaches to living well with chronic pain, illness or stress of any kind. Breathworks also designs mindfulness-based courses and training for schools, health care professionals and businesses to promote and maintain well-being amongst pupils, families, patients, clients, staff and management.

Centre For Mindfulness Research And Practice   Bangor University's Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice is committed to the promotion of wellbeing through the application of mindfulness-based approaches. They teach the general public, train professionals and research the clinical applications of mindfulness.

CityZen: CityZen is based in SE4, London, UK. An oasis in the 'spiritual desert' of modern urban life. They offer weekly drop ins, courses and individual counselling and much more.  

Everyday Mindfulness Scotland: A social enterprise based in Renfrewshire offering courses mainly in west Scotland, but also distance learning and courses across Scotland on request. No salary is taken, and any profits are invested in the company to improve and expand the services on offer.

Mindfulness Association The Mindfulness Association is a company that has been set up at the request of Rob Nairn to deliver secular mindfulness training.  The Association offers a training path that begins with the Mindfulness One Year Training, continues with the Compassion One Year Training and concludes with a training in Insight and Wisdom.  It is also concerned with the training and ongoing supervision of a bank of professional trainers to deliver these courses.

Mindfulness Foundation: Mindfulness in Schools Campaign

The Mindfulness Foundation has started a grassroots Mindfulness in Schools Campaign advocating and fundraising to make mindfulness education available to all 9 million UK school children by 2022. Its goal is to increase happiness and resilience in children while improving student outcomes.

University of Massachusetts Centre for Mindfulness The pioneers of MBSR: The Centre for Mindfulness Stress Reduction. Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn founded The Stress Reduction Program in 1979. His work and research has bought Mindfulness into mainstream medicine.
